WAKO License

We are writing regarding further development of Martial Lifestyle and the continual improvements we are making to our club. We consider health and safety and the standard of our training facilities as top priority. For that reason we ensure that instructors insurance and pubic liability cover at all our venues is completely comprehensive and all staff our trained and prioritise safety of all our students at all time.

It has been brought to our attention by a number of associates in the Martial Arts industry that even though the venues and instructors are fully protected against accident and injury, where does a student stand if they are injured during training? Fortunately for us we have never had a severe occurrence but we have heard of several cases in other clubs where students have received injuries leaving them unable to work for a period or required costly medical treatment.

For those reasons we have looked into further student protection through our World Kickboxing governing body WAKO. The organisation offer a student licence that affiliates us to the most prestigious World Martial Arts governing body and protects you personally for injuries during participation in classes and competitions.

From 1st May 2011 we are asking all Martial Lifestyle students to acquire a WAKO license. The annual licensing fee is £25 which will give you a year’s cover and can be paid by cash or cheque when completing the attached form. Each student will receive an official licensing book shortly after which is retained by you and used as an official record book for all grading, competitions and seminars. Therefore it will act as an official achievement log throughout your martial arts training as well as the affiliation and insurance benefits.

We trust that you are satisfied with our proposal. Please note any student that does not acquire a WAKO license from 1st May 2011 will no longer be able to take part in grading or competitions. If you have any further questions or queries please speak to your instructor or contact one of the founders directly.

2011 KIDS SUMMER TRAINING COURSE EXMOUTH

HAVEN HOLIDAY PARK DEVON CLIFFS- 17TH – 19TH JUNE 2011

We have now planned our third annual training trip for all the kids (and parents) of Martial Lifestyle aged 8 and over. This time we are travelling to the Haven Holiday Park in Sandy Bay, Exmouth.

The trip will start on Friday 17th June (After school) and will end approx 6pm on Sunday 19th June. However participants can stay Sunday night if they wish as accommodation is covered.

We will be staying in luxury 3 bedroom caravans (even better accommodation standard than last year!) which sleep up to eight. Caravans are fully furnished with lounge area, kitchen, bed linen, colour TV, bathroom etc. They are also self catering units so the kids can bring food with them or have the option to go out for breakfast, lunch and dinner if they prefer.

To get the course started, put everyone in good spirit and the mood for training we have planned a welcome get together on arrival Friday evening.

The children will be supervised at all times by instructors Andy Cleeves, Sharon Gill, Mustafa Marouf, Andrew Vasili, Gio Marchese, Greg Langson and Haroulla Vasili, with additional parents to help take good care of all the children.

Training

There will be six sessions over two days plus sessions for mums and dads who attend. Training will include running, fitness, flexibility, teamwork, syllabus, pad work, sparring, challenges and games. All based around hard work, fun and lots of awards.

Please bring tracksuits, t-shirts & trainers for the morning session, martial arts clothes for second session including trainers, and tracksuits, jogging bottoms etc for last session.

All children will have the choice to come on the trip by themselves or with parent(s). We must stress the kids will be supervised at all times.

Please note a comprehensive itinerary will be given to all participants a month before the trip to clarify exactly what to bring and what we will be doing and when.

IRISH OPEN 2011

On Friday the 4th March, Martial Lifestyle and Bristol Lau Gar took a team of fighters to the renowned biggest tournament in Europe at present, THE IRISH OPEN, Dublin.

The team consisted of Cory Cook, Kam Bains Doyle, Ethan Harris, Aston Cook, Andrew Vasilli, Haroulla Vasili, Sharon Gill, Andy Cleeves, Nathan Young, Matt Ogden, Mark Deacon and Gio Marchese and team coach Sean Veira.

We arrived on the Friday afternoon where all fighters made their weights and heights and prepared for the team event. The team consisted of four men, one woman and was made up of Andrew Vasilli, Andy Cleeves, Mark Deacon, Matt Ogden and Sharon Gill. Unfortunately we had a very hard draw, being drawn up against one of the top American teams, 'FULL CIRCLE', where we lost by 3 wins to 1 with a mention going out to Andrew Vasilli who again fought extremely well, just losing out by one point to the best fighter on their team, Ross Levine, who is a very well known, respected fighter.

In the individuals, Matt Ogden, Fought extremely well winning his first three fights and just losing out. Gio Marchese fought in light contact and gained a 3rd place in the -63kg category, fighting exceptionally well to beat highly ranked Italian Marco Nordio in the Quarter final and just losing to the eventual winner Raj Patel.

Cory Cook and Kam Bains Doyle both had hard sections where in the boy’s intermediate grades -135cm and -150cm Cory won both his first fights but lost to the eventual winner in the -135cm.

Ethan Harris again had another very tough section in the boys -150cm advanced, where every fight could have easily been a final. Ethan fought very clever and battled his way to the semi finals where only losing by two points to a very top English fighter, thus gaining a well deserved third place!!!!! WELL DONE ETHAN!!!

Andrew Vasilli and Nathan Young both fought in the boys + 165cm where Andrew beat has first two opponents and then had an exciting fight with one of Italy's top junior fighters, only just losing by one point right on the, bell.

Aston Cook, fought in both advanced girls -160cm and + 160cm. Unfortunately losing her fight in the +160cm where the girls were all at such a standard, it was hard to believe, Aston went onto her next section where she won her first two fights and then took a nasty blow to her face causing her nose to bleed considerably!! After a while, the first aid let her carry on but eventually lost in her third fight after some grueling bouts!!!!

Next up were the woman and after having to wait for many hours whilst the junior fighters were on, the adrenalin of Haroulla Vasilli and Sharon Gill were pumping madly with both of them itching to fight.

Sharon fighting in the ladies -50kgs and Haroulla fighting in the ladies -55kgs and -60kg.

All the ladies section were absolutely massive with each one having at least 3 world champions in and competitors from all over the world. Haroulla was first up in the -55kgs where she fought a very top Italian girl and just lost out. In her -60kgs, she fought Charlie Maddocks in the second round which she won with ease showing Charlie some unbelievable technique and style, in her third round she came up against Louisa Gullutti, the current world games champion from Italy and unfortunately lost, but gaining spirit, experience and belief in herself in the mean time.

Sharon Gill also had a very hard section with her second fight being with a top Belgian with awesome kicking ability, winning that fight, she then went on to face a top Norwegian from their national team, but again managed to win comfortably. The fourth round was with another top fighter from Hungary called Mercedes Veres who is world Wako champion, Sharon having a lot of history with this competitor as they have fought each other quite a few times and is always guaranteed an exciting fight, fought very hard, and at the end of the two rounds it was a draw, having extra time where at the end of that had another draw, so resulting in sudden death where Sharon just managed to score a well timed super fast side kick, giving her a well deserved place in the final.

The final was another fight between Sharon and Giulia Cavallaro (current world wako champion) from Italy as they have met before a number of times. Sharon having to be on form fought her heart out over the two rounds and after another draw at the end eventually went on to win so another victory for her.

All in all, a very successful and encouraging event for the whole team.

Overall Results

3rd place - Gio Marchese (light contact - 63kgs)

3rd place - Ethan Harris (boys -150cms advanced points)

1st place - Sharon Gill (Ladies advanced -50 kgs points)

Wako British Championships 26th & 27th February 2011

On Saturday and Sunday 26th/27th february, Martial Lifestyle took a small team to Nottingham to fight in the biggest tournament in Britain, the 'Wako British Championships'.

The team consisted of Gio Marchese, Sharon Gill, Haroulla Vasilli, Andrew Vasilli, Matt Ogden, and Kam Bains Doyle.

Everyone fought brilliant with Gio setting the standards by winning the senior mens -63kg in light contact on the Saturday, by beating an excellent Opponent in the final.

On the Sunday was the points competition where Sharon Gill fought extremely well beating all her rivals and winning the senior Ladies -50kg by beating a very well known fighter in the final, also Haroulla Vasilli won a well deserved 2nd place in the cadets 16-18 years and a 3rd place in the senior ladies -55kg.

I think the fighter of the day has to go to Andrew Vasilli where in one of his first times in the senior mens category beat all his opponents with ease gaining him a place in the final where he eventually got 2nd place losing to a very good and experienced fighter in the senior mens -69kg.

So all in all an excellent weekend for the small team that took part, with hopefully the wins gaining them all a place on the England Wako team.

£500 raised for Brislington Church

On Saturday 22nd January 2011, the students of Martial Lifestyle gathered to raise money for Brislington URC.

The Church was in much need of repair,  work was needed to its hall, the hall that Martial Lifestyle run classes for all ages.

The Senior instructors at the club arranged for the students to take part in a sponsored charity kickathon, this involved a collective 50,000 licks in one after noon.

Over 40 students turned up to support this event, with ages ranging from 4 years to 40+ years.

They managed to reach the target in just 2 hours and in doing so collectively raised £1000.

£500 was set aside for the Martial Lifestyle charity fund and the remaining £500 was kindly donated to the church.

Founders Andy Cleeves & Sharon Gill plus Senior instructor Gio Marchese are proud of all the students that took part in this event and are extremely happy to help raise money for the church and to do something so positive for the community.
