Sunday 21st -SHARON GILL AND CORY COOK WIN WAKO BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS FEBRUARY 2010

Last Saturday 20th February, Sharon Gill took a team of fighters to the renowned Wako British Championships in Nottingham. This is one of Great Britain’s biggest tournaments for UK fighters where  fighters compete for a space on the Great Britain Squad. With a team consisting of Cory Cook, Kam Bains Doyle, Ethan Harris, Aston Cook, Ken Labingo, Mustafa Marouf and of course Sharon Gill herself, they all did extremely well.

First up was none other than our very own’ hyper active’ Cory Cook in the boys – 28kg division. This was a massive section with a lot of top fighters from all over the country, most of which were all black belts . Cory fought every fight with pure determination, showing excellent skill and timing in every one of his fights. With each fight being 2 rounds he showed just how fitness really comes into play when it comes to the crunch- and out fought every one of his opponents. He fought all the way to the final gaining his first Wako British title which is a big title to win at such a young age. Well done Cory, you have earned your place on the Great Britain squad.

Kam Bains Doyle, Ethan Harris and Aston Cook also fought very well but just losing narrowly. With Ethan only losing by 1 point in sudden death in the quarter finals of two very tough boys sections. Aston Cook gained a credible third place which has also secured her a place on the Great Britain team.

Mustafa Marouf unfortunately wasn’t feeling too good all weekend due to a sickness bug, but still went on the mat with a very positive mindset. After some gruelling fights he came away with another third place in the Men’s – 79kg earning himself a place on the Great Britain Squad.

Last up was Martial Lifestyle founder Sharon Gill fighting in the ladies – 50kg and – 55kg. Sharon has many world class opponents in both these sections that she’s fought a few times so knew she had to perform well in order to keep her place on the team. By using her speed, agility and vast experience she outfought all her opponents and earned a very well deserved first place in both sections, making her a double Wako British Champion and securing her place on the Great Britain squad also.

So all in all it was a positive day for all Martial Lifestyle competitiors with the results as follows. Cory Cook, Aston cook, Mustafa Marouf and Sharon Gill all gaining their places on the Great Britain squad where they will go and train with the GB coaches.

March 5th – 7th March saw Sharon Gill win yet again another Irish Open Title. A team from Martial Lifestyle set out on Friday consisting of Andy Cleeves, Sharon Gill, Mustafa Marouf, Matt Ogden, Haroulla Vasili, Andrew Vasili, Aston Cook and Ethan Harris and led by Bristol and GB coach Sean Veira.

First up on the Saturday were the men’s individuals where matt Ogden won his first fight but losing out in the second round to a very talented and fast American fighter in the – 79kg. Then it was Mustafa Marouf who also won his first fight in style but lost to a top fighter from England called Stuart Quin, also in the men’s – 79kg. The men’s  lighter weights were some of the best sections ever produced in this tournament ever where every top figter from every country and association were present.

In the womens open weight Sharon Gill put up a great fight but lost out to another experienced fighter.

Andy Cleeves was next on the mat who put up a tremendous battle in the -89kg weight just losing out to a fighter by one point in the quarters. He continued on in the open weight losing out in the quarters to an American fighter! With over 200 entrants this was a fantastic category.

On Sunday it was time for the Ladies individuals and also all – 18 years. First up was Ethan Harris who had some very top sections but fought like a Trojan just narrowly losing out by one point to an exceptional opponent to an Italian in the boy’s black belt division – 135cm. Next up was Andrew Vasili who fought in a very tough section indeed. After a very tough fight he lost to an Italian fighter who was really powerful and experienced.

Next was the time for the girls to fight. Haroulla Vasili and Aston Cook both fought in the Girls -165cm Advanced section and did really well, Haroulla won her first fight by 10 points showing pure skill by kicking her opponent in the head no less than three times!Unfortunately her next fight was against a really top fighter from Germany who unfortunately she lost but did very well. Aston Cook fought in the same section and did extremely well too. She won her first three fights in style totally outclassing all her opponents and eventually lost in the quarter finals to a tough fast Irish fighter only by one point!

Last to fight was Sharon Gill who fought in the ladies – 50kg. This section again was full of none other than 4 world champions from various backgrounds plus a whole load of other top fighters from all over the world, with the Italians being very strong!!! After a gruelling 4 hours and 5 fights later Sharon was crowned the Irish Open Champion yet again!

CIMAC SUPERLEAGUE NEWPORT MARCH 2010

On Sunday 21st March Martial Lifestyle took a team of fighters over to Newport for the Cimac Superleague. The team consisted of, Harrison Bains Doyle, Thomas Crocker, Anil Singh, Kyri Chackarou, Olivia Davies, Kam Bains Doyle, Cory Cook, Josh Crocker, Kat Chackarou, Jasmine Lawrenson, Aston cook, Haroulla Vasili, Qays Langan Das,  Andrew Vasili, Jacob Burgess, Ishana Moores, Keyshore Moores, Lauren Howie, Jen Ashby, Yana, Ken Labingo, Greg Langson, Matt Ogden and Mustafa Marouf.

Everyone fought extremely well with exceptional performances’ from Kat Chackarou winning first place in the girls novice – 4ft 4’ after some tough fights and Ishana Moores, who in my opinion was the fighter of the day from the team as she fought in two sections, one of which having some very advanced tall girls competing who were current world champions, just narrowly missing out on 3rd place. Ishana listened well and fought some very tactical fights with excellent movement. She is definitely a fighter to watch in the future. Eventually she gained a 3rd place in the girls – 4ft 7’ advanced section.

Olivia Davies gained a well deserved 3rd place in the girls – 4ft 9’ beginner’s section and Qas Langan Das gained a 3rd place also, in the boys – 5ft 4’.

Haroulla Vasili and brother Andrew Vasili both fought in the cadets section with them both placing 2nd and having close fights with some very top competitors. Aston Cook fought very well, with again some top fighters in her category but came away with a 2nd place in the girls – 5ft 3’ Advanced section.

In the adults our first trophy went to Jen Ashby who placed 3rd in the Ladies beginner section – 60kgs. Greg Langson gained a very well earned 1st place in the Intermediate men’s – 75kg’s beating all his opponents quite convincingly  and Matt Ogden came 1st in the men’s senior division – 79kgs with his final fight being a 10 point clear spread to him.

Well done to everyone who took part and represented Martial Lifestyle and Bristol Lau Gar.

July 2010

Aston and Cory Cook both won theri divisions at the World famous US Open. After a family holiday in Orlando our two students attended the event at Lake Buena Vista Florida on the 9th and 10th July. The event offered a staggering 420 divisions in different forms and fighting disciplines. Competitors were in attendence from countries all over the world.

Cory Cook started his 8-9yrs interemediate division at 9am on Saturday morning. After a tough first fight he got into his stride making his way to the final. After 5 gruelling fights he proved victorious using his quick movement and hand speed to beat all his opponents.

Aston Cook started her 14-15yrs Black Belt division almost at the same time as her brother was competing. She faced some very top competition in this senior division particulary from the American fighters. She was shocked by the kicking ability of the US competitors but soon settled into her own fighting style. She used the 6x6m areas to her advantage by moving around and shocking her opponents with fierce hand technique attacks. She grew stronger from bout to bout and after 5 tough fights was crowned US Open Champion 2010. She was commended by referees and spectators for her sharpe hand combinations and is now already looking forward to her next competition.

There was only one problem... Both fighters are unsure how they are going to get their awards back home to England as they both received trophies standing taller than tehm!

WELL DONE GUYS
